Addressing the trafficking of cultural property through the public/private law nexus.
Detailed Description
Please book two tickets to attend both Thursday and Friday
A two-day conference at the University of Kent, Canterbury Thursday 6 and Friday 7 June 2024
The commercialization of the past and the trafficking in cultural property are not recent phenomenon. To prevent and remedy this trafficking, multiple instruments have been adopted by international, regional and national organisations, as well as private and public stakeholders. This has created a multi-layered and complex web of norms. Yet, few lawyers have engaged with this disordered regulatory framework that bridges the division between public law (the branch of law that regulates the conduct of states and international organisations) and private law (the branch that regulates the conduct of individuals). The conference will bring together academics from around the world within the public and private law specialization as well as relevant stakeholders involved in the fight against trafficking with the aim to re-order norms, standards and public behaviour around the nexus public/private law, that in turn will improve the current regulatory framework.
The conference is funded by the BA Academy
