Firesetting Theory, Assessment and Treatment Course

Course Description

This workshop will be delivered by Professor Theresa Gannon and Dr Katie Sambrooks. It will cover characteristics that are common amongst adults who set deliberate fires and the differences and similarities between individuals who set deliberate fires and individuals who commit other crimes. Theoretical explanations of deliberate firesetting will be discussed, including the most recent comprehensive theory: the Multi-Trajectory Theory of Adult Firesetting (M-TTAF; Gannon et al., 2012; 2023). In addition, best practice approaches to the assessment of treatment needs, risk assessment, and treatment with this population will be explored. The workshops will provide attendees with the practical knowledge to be able to successfully deliver the Firesetting Intervention Programme for Prisoners (FIPP) or the Firesetting Intervention for Mentally Disordered Offenders (FIP-MO) within their own service. Please note: To be able to deliver either the FIP-MO or FIPP programme, involvement of a registered practitioner (e.g., psychologist) is required.

Your place on the training workshop includes one copy of a treatment manual either FIPP - Firesetting Intervention Programme for Prisoners OR FIP-MO - Firesetting Intervention Programme for Mentally Disordered Offenders, which you will select during the order process. Please note these are sister treatment programmes and therefore very similar in content. The primary difference between them is that the mental health content runs throughout the FIP-MO, whereas it is appendicised in the FIPP, for use as and when needed.

3) To appropriately credit the authors of the FIPP/FIP-MO and all associated materials when reporting on your use of these materials both formally (e.g., websites/presentations) and informally (e.g., treatment reports).
